Description
Cannabigerol (CBG) is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant. Cannabigerol is the non-acidic form of cannabigerolic acid (CBGA), the parent molecule (“parent cannabinoid”) from which many other cannabinoids are produced. When most varieties of cannabis reach maturity, most of the cannabigerol is converted to other cannabinoids, mainly tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) or cannabidiol (CBD), usually leaving less than 1% of cannabigerol in the plant.
Cannabigerol is a secondary cannabinoid that is formed during the early stages of the cannabis plant life cycle and is extracted from the plant flowers during the flowering stage, making it difficult to harvest large quantities. It was recently discovered that industrial cannabis produces the highest levels of cannabigerol of most cannabis species. Further research has shown that this is due to a residual gene. Using this information, the growers were able to create varieties with this residual gene that increases cannabigerol levels.
Potential uses
Pain, anxiety: Cannabigerol (CBG) has the potential to relieve pain, especially neuropathic pain, where tests suggest higher efficacy than cannabidiol (CBD). Cannavigerol can also inhibit the uptake of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) into the brain, which can reduce anxiety and muscle tension, with tests in mice showing that cannabigerol has antidepressant effects similar to imipramine.
Inflammation, digestive conditions: It has been shown to improve a model of inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.
Skin conditions: Cannavigerol induces the production of the body’s natural moisturizing fluids, promising much for dry skin syndromes and the ability to cure other skin conditions.
Glaucoma: Cannavigerol has been shown to relieve intraocular pressure, which can be beneficial in treating glaucoma.
Neuroprotection: Cannavigerol has been shown to have neuroprotective properties and may prove to be promising for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as Huntington’s disease and multiple sclerosis.
Antiseptic: Cannavigerol is known to have antiseptic properties and research shows that it may be effective against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (superbug MRSA).
Cancer: Cannavigerol exhibits promising properties for the possible treatment of a wide range of cancers, including breast, liver, lung, pancreas, skin, ovarian, kidney, bladder and colon cancers.
