Cannabis use and body weight
There have been many claims about weight loss using Cannabis on a regular basis, but many remain skeptical about the relationship between the two. A study by the American Journal of Medicine, which looked at a number of issues, found that cannabis use was actually linked to a variety of physiological “slimming” characteristics.
Source of material
The study involved 4,657 people, 46% of whom had never used Cannabis before, 12% were active users and 42% had used Cannabis in the past.
Conclusion: Body Mass Index
Body Mass Index is a measure of a person’s body fat based on their height and weight. The study found that current cannabis users had a Body Mass Index that was 7% lower than non-users.
Conclusion: Insulin levels
Current Cannabis users had 16% lower insulin levels compared to non-users. High levels of insulin are often cited as the reason why the body stores unused glucose as fat.
Conclusion: Insulin resistance
A high insulin resistance makes it difficult to lose weight, as it will affect the body’s ability to burn fat. Regular cannabis users had 17% lower insulin resistance than non-users
Conclusion: The waist circumference
Finally, people who used cannabis regularly had a waist circumference that was about 4% smaller than that of non-users. For occasional users Occasional Cannabis users (who had not smoked in the pre-study period) also showed the same trend as regular users in the results, but on a smaller scale.
